This growing crisis in the industry is largely caused by the Government’s unfair two-tier tax system, which forces local salons to pay 3X the amount of taxes that other businesses on the high street pay. These crippling conditions are threatening the livelihood of 90,000 hairdressers, barbers, and beauty professionals across the United Kingdom.
Our Industry Is In Danger
The hair and beauty industry has always been a pillar of local communities, creating jobs, offering apprenticeships, providing vital self-care services, and keeping high streets vibrant and thriving. But right now, the situation in the UK is bleak:
- By 2027, we risk losing all industry apprenticeships, cutting off a vital pathway for young talent to enter the industry.
- By 2030, predictions suggest only 3% of salons operating under the current employment model will remain.
- Unfair tax practices have already cost taxpayers billions and have put thousands of salons out of business.
- To avoid high tax bills, unregulated self-employment models are growing, putting clients, businesses, professionals, and the reputation of the industry at risk
